What agreed with you?\u00a0 What didn\u2019t?\u00a0 Why?<br \/>\n<strong>Advanced students:<\/strong> See if you can spot the point at which her own work moves from ethnography to art.\u00a0 What differences do you see between the two? \u00a0<em>(An additional page max.)<\/em><\/li>\n<li><strong>SOAN students<\/strong>: Locate some examples from the ethnographies you have read for your other classes of the issues raised in today\u2019s readings.\u00a0 Summarize the techniques those ethnographies use to portray others. <strong><br \/>\nMVC students<\/strong>: What does your discipline say about how to represent others?\u00a0 How do its issues connect (or not) with those in the readings?<\/li>\n<li>Visual ethnography has two sides: the objective side and the subjective side.\u00a0 The first shows people\u2019s behavior \u2013 often behavior of which they are unaware.\u00a0 The second presents peoples internal ideas about what they are doing.\u00a0 How do today\u2019s articles demonstrate one or the other (or both) of these aspects of ethnographic work?<\/li>\n<li>Compare some early issues of <u>National Geographic<\/u> with some more recent issues \u2013 ideally picking an issue from each of the last 5 decades. \u00a0Note at least 4-6 ways that the magazine has changed over the years.<br \/>\n<em>(The Armacost library has copies going back to 1959; I have more recent issues that you can borrow.)\u00a0<\/em><\/li>\n<li>\u00a0Locate photos from back issues of <u>National Geographic<\/u> that illustrate \u2013 or contradict \u2013 the claims made in Lutz and Collins\u2019 chapters on <u>NG<\/u> aesthetics.<br \/>\n<em>(Photocopy, scan, or photograph the images, so you can share them with the class.)<\/em><\/li>\n<li><strong>SOAN students: <\/strong>Identify 3-4 ethnographic case studies (books or articles) \u2013 from your reading for your other sociology and anthropology courses \u2013 that raise issues treated in today\u2019s <u>PK&amp;B<\/u> chapters.\u00a0 List these on a sheet of paper and write a long paragraph for each about how the issues are raised.\u00a0\u00a0 Be ready to share your answers with the class. <strong><br \/>\nMVC students: <\/strong>How has your discipline framed similar issues?\u00a0 List these on a sheet of paper and write a long paragraph for each about how the issues are raised.\u00a0 Be ready to share your answers with the class<\/li>\n<li>Write 2-3 pages about a social situation you experienced that shocked or horrified you, yet seemed normal to others. \u00a0What did you find difficult or off-putting? \u00a0How, specifically, did your emotional reactions color your interpretation of the event? \u00a0What would it have taken for you to understand the event from the other participants\u2019 point of view?<\/li>\n<li>Locate 3 <u>good<\/u> articles on Disneyland in reputable<strong> (scholarly) <\/strong>social science or critical media journals.\u00a0 Read those articles and summarize <u>each<\/u> of them in a long paragraph (250-300 words).\u00a0 Add 2-3 sentences explaining why the articles are good ones.<br \/>\n<em>Bring enough copies of your summaries to class to distribute to the other students (plus one for the course leader).<\/em><\/li>\n<li>Prepare a short paper (500-750 words) applying Young\u2019s and MacDougall\u2019s insights to some of the films we\u2019ve seen (in class and as part of the Film Festival).\u00a0 Add insights from Spickard and Nelson where possible.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Write up each of the following in 2-3 pages (3-4 pages for #5 &amp; #6). \u00a0We&#8217;ll use them as discussion-starters in class.
